THE WORST CLASSIC WHO COMPANION DEPARTURE

The award for the worst companion departure goes to Sarah Jane Smith. Yes, her! Sarah’s departure is Alpha Centaurian awful. She throws a fit to get attention (like a spoilt child), demands to be returned  home (like a spoiled child), then storms off to her room (like a spoilt child), and then acts all ‘oh I don’t want to go’ before leaving the Tardis for good (like a spoilt child)

Her manner, demeanour, and attitude towards The Doctor are shocking: The Doctor isn’t a good listener at the best of times, everyone knows this, but Sarah acting like a stuck-up snob isn’t deserving any quarter of attention. She even complains about ‘bouncing’ around the universe and fighting off bug-eyes monsters. What did she expect when she found herself in thirteenth-century England fighting off a potato-head troll alien? And she complains about needing a bath?!? Look about you Sarah Jane, your in a spaceship with an infinite number of rooms, there will be a bath somewhere.

Her departure almost comes as a sigh of relief and doesn’t do herself any favors by acting all innocent at the end, just like the Sarah Jane Smith we all love her for. Her departure scene is definitely a damp squib, and makes for some poor final character development. Actress Elisabeth Sladen originally hoped Sarah Jane would go out with a bang. Instead she went out all mouth and no heart, and probably left some with a gapping headache.
