ALIAS: Sydney Wilson

REAL NAME: Ray Barrett

Who is hiding under the mask? It certainly isn't Sydney Wilson.

USED IN: The Rescue

REASON FOR USAGE: To conceal the fact that Koquillion was Bennett (Ray Barrett) in disguise, the end-credits for part one listed ‘Sydney Wilson’ as Koquillion. The name Sydney Wilson came from two individuals: Sydney Newman (Head of Drama), and Donald Wilson (Head of Series and Serials). Ray Barrett was credited as Koquillion for part two of The Rescue.

ALIAS:  Neil Toynay

REAL NAME: Anthony Ainley

USED IN: Castrovalva

REASON FOR USAGE: Neil Toynay was an anagram of Tony Ainley or Anthony Ainley who played The Tremas Master. The Master disguised himself as the Portreeve, until his ultimate reveal in part four. The production team wanted to conceal the fact that Anthony Ainley was playing both the Portreeve and The Master.

ALIAS: Leon Ny Taiy

REAL NAME: Anthony Ainley

USED IN: Time-Flight

Kalid is not who he appears to be. And Leon Ny Taiy is certainly a weird name. Is it a cover for something?

REASON FOR USAGE: Same as Castrovalva, Anthony Ainley played both Kalid and The Master, with Kalid being another disguise for The Master. Again, the production team wanted to keep The Master’s return as a surprise (again), so they opted to list a made-up actor as Kalid, until the surprise reveal. Did they think scrabbling the letters of Tony Ainley to make another fake name would work as second time?

ALIAS: James Stoker

REAL NAME: Anthony Ainley (yes, a third time!)

USED IN: The King’s Demons

REASON FOR USAGE: Pretty much like the previous two serials, they wanted to keep The Master’s return a surprise, but they opted for a different approach. I think they ran out of name ideas to scrabble Tony Ainley about. James Stoker was listed in publicity material – as The Master’s reveal would occur as part one’s cliffhanger – but looking closer and you notice scramble the letters about and you get Master’s Joke – clever right? The character Anthony Ainley played Sir Gillies Estram, is a little more obvious as ‘Estram’ is Master unscrambled.

ALIAS: Roy Tromelly

REAL NAME: Terry Molloy

USED IN: Remembrance of the Daleks

REASON FOR USAGE: Same as Anthony Ainley, Roy Tromelly is an anagram of Terry Molloy who played Davros. Roy Tromelly was listed as playing the Emperor Dalek, until part four when the Emperor Dalek is revealed to be Davros (played by Terry Molloy), and the end credits reflected this during part one. The Radio Times also carried the name Roy Tromelly to keep up this deception.
